The German army, the Bundeswehr, has been part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) for Afghanistan since 2002. The deployment of ISAF is a military mission. With its rulings of April 1993 and June 1994 the Federal Constitutional Court cleared the path for deployment by the German Armed Forces on such missions as well; since December 2004 the Act on Parliamentary Participation on Decisions to Deploy Armed Forces Abroad sets out the Bundestag’s powers in such cases. Today, under a UN mandate the ISAF supports the government of Afghanistan in training Afghan security forces, protecting the population, and creating a safe environment for civil reconstruction.
