The 2030 Agenda as a compass

The international community has set itself ambitious targets for sustainable development. Germany and its partners are doing their part to bring about change.

As the second-largest donor for official development cooperation and as an active advocate of global partnerships, Germany plays an important role in global development. The core of the 2030 Agenda is the 17 ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and implementation of the Agenda is a way to lay the foundations for global economic progress in harmony with social justice and in line with the Earth’s ecological limitations. Germany has consistently achieved the UN target of investing at least 0.7% of GDP in development activities. Support for projects in partner countries is provided by GIZ (the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), the KfW banking group and other organisations.

Global campaign for food security

The war against hunger remains a key challenge. Every year, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development invests around 2 billion euros in global food security and agricultural development. Promoting small-scale agriculture in Africa is a key focus of this work. Germany is also the second-largest state donor to the World Food Programme (WFP).
